With Operation Saga El Mundo got itself a Data Journalism Award nomination. Operation Saga reveals the corrupt culture at the SGAE, the main collecting society for songwriters, composers and music publishers in Spain. An interview with journalist David Alameda.
“Look, this the best way to explain how the story went with only a look”. I would show my data visualization and point at the figures, complementing them with some words. Visually.
What inspired you to make Operation Sagaa?
I thought of ant’s nest, a labyrinth with different directions and little places where they put stuff under our feet.
Did you work by yourself or in a team?
This time I worked in the visualization, programming and researching almost by myself. With the help of the police inform, of course.
How did you get a hold on the data you needed?
I research different sources, compare them and try to unify data, then I select only the interesting for the visualization.
Which tools were used making this production?
Pen and paper :) excel, illustrator, photoshop and flash (animation and Actionscript code) and I am working in a version in html5.
How did it take to make Operation Saga?
Around 2 weeks.
Were there any bumps in the road?
Yes, there was a lack of photographs of the implicated people so I decided to represent them with colors, after that I got a few photos and I add them in a second level of information.
Do you have a useful tip for starting data journalists?
Look at the data and see what it tells, don’t try to acomodate it to your thinking and make things simple.
